FoodLoop: The real time, local, food discount app

Project needs  Developers, Designers

  • Philippa Main
We are creating the FoodLoop app: communicating when perishable food is close to it's best before end date. Fresh vegetables, fruit, eggs, yoghurts, cheese are within our remit. We link to retailers inventory management system. As a result, we promote food discounts automatically & in real time to local consumers. This creates a thriving market for discounted food & as a result, foods are discounted, rather than just being thrown out. This makes nutritionally rich food accessible to…

Know your onions - what's cheap when

Project needs  Writers
  • Members
  • Steve Curati
What are we making? We want to make an app or service that helps people eat more fruit and veg, more cheaply, by giving up-to-date information about what's cheap in any month (and by extension, what's in season). How would we make it? We would use the "Latest wholesale fruit and vegetable prices" dataset (https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/wholesale-fruit-and-vegetable-prices) which shows variations in prices throughout the year. We would draw inferences with seasonality…

A smartphone app to support weight loss. It will improve dietary behaviour through a range of behaviour change approaches including self-monitoring of diet and goal setting. We already have an app MyMealMate (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mymealmate&hl=en_GB) which has been tested in a randomised controlled trial (Carter et al. J Med Internet Res. 2013;15:e32) and shown to be more effective in promoting weight loss than self-monitoring of diet using other approaches. This…

Anti-Shock Menu for Restaurants

Project needs  Developers, Designers, Engineers
  • Members
  • Benjamin Greenaway
We are changing food habits through economic incentives. The restaurant industry in the UK is a £84Billion industry employing 1.4million people. But in a global environment, stretched supply chains, ever changing weather patterns and low margins restaurants are far more susceptible to price shocks. Our aim is to provide restaurants with dish level analytics to showcase how variability in pricing can have an impact on their margins. Through this process we hope to move restaurants to ingredients…

EatMapp : Eat Healthy, Eat Happy

Project needs  Developers, Designers, Scientists
  • Members
  • Ashish Saggar
We are looking to develop a platform to help people who are constrained by certain food groups in their diets. The constraint can be genetic such as a hypersensitivity, an intolerance or an allergy but can also be a food choice due to beliefs that are social or religious in nature. We believe that the platform that we intend to develop will change the way people search for food around them to find suitable, healthy and nutritional food. In the retail food industry there is a general lack of clarity…

Made Near Me (http://madenear.me.uk/) maps food products sold in the UK. We started with the food products that are on Open Food Facts (http://uk.openfoodfacts.org): we use the Food Standards Association approval numbers like "UK VD011 EC" to find out the name and the location of the manufacturer, and we put the food products on a map of the UK, powered by OpenStreetMap. Everyone can then discover the food products made in her/his area. It is also very interesting to spot products from…

Ever walked into a supermarket wondering what should I cook? Which products are best? Can I afford it? Rising food prices and the vast amount of information on what is healthy have made eating well sound burdensome and distant. We know that our lifestyle isn't as healthy as we'd like it to be, but the typical family spend for having ‘five-a day’ would be more than double the current average spend. With pricier products not necessarily meaning higher quality and healthier food, the…

The purpose of this project is to explore the correlations between holding size, yield, environmental impact, nutrition and job creation in a UK setting. The group has identified a gap in UK government data around small scale production. Given recent reports (see below) considering the long term food security potential of moving away from agribusiness and back into small scale production this is an area in which data is urgently needed. 'Does Size Matter?' will offer an interface through…

Local Food Economy Mapper

Project needs  Developers, Designers
  • Members
  • Helen Steer

Local Food Economy Mapper would provide guidance to local authorities, activists and even entrepreneurs to help them understand their market. Combining demographic data with the family food survey would produce a tool that could identify numbers of people and their budgets in any area from city wide studies to the local areas around a parade of shops. Adding in FSA business location data would allow us to recognise what exists in an area, identify food deserts and recognise a lack of competition.…
