An open-source tool that uses open data to improve participation and outcomes in urban transport planning. By being transparent and open in the data and algorithms it uses, our tool will allow much greater public engagement in public transport. This will in turn allow cities to focus their transport policies on goals such as employment and productivity. The UK is unusual as a large country in that its mid-size cities are no more productive than its small cities. This observation is part of a "productivity…

When it comes to delivering better employment, the job-hunting challenge is just a small part of the problem. With the proliferation of zero-hours and short-term contracts, many people do not have access to stable, long-term employment. The co-operative economy offers an alternative way of doing business: with workers co-operatives specifically committed to creating meaningful, stable and socially valuable jobs. However, although mutuals have received considerable attention from government at certain…

Many employers currently recognise that those they recruit are not socio-economically representative of the wider population and that using absolute performance measures (e.g. A-level grades) may be part of the problem. PiC’s contextualisation technology draws from open data to put an applicant’s performance into context, thereby enabling employers to make…

We intend to create an app to help the sufferers of mental health conditions look for new employment, support them having been signed off or having left their current work or employment. I’ve experienced this issue first hand with a family member. It took nearly 4 years for them to be able to return to work full time and this was only possible after leaving their original place of work. It was clear to see the multiple effects this had on the whole family and friendship group, ranging from financial…

Project Description The mismatch frequently found between employers’ needs and employees’ skills leads to worklessness, labour migration and reduced economic performance. This is a problem for many industries, where the inability to match the skills output of educational establishments to the needs of industry, particularly in a rapidly changing economy, have proved problematic. At its heart, this is a data problem. If colleges understood the future needs of employers in a dynamic way, the employee…
