Just a hunch! What if we used existing datasets and created new ones to help everyone rally round their nearest school? On entering your postcode and picking primary or secondary, you'll be presented with a page about precisely one school - your nearest state-funded one. You'll see contextual data to help you understand your school and its locality; share your hopes and fears for your children's education; and engage with community initiatives dedicated to making it the best place…

English local authorities use a Common Application System (“CAS”) for state school entry in the principal years of admission (e.g. into year 7 for most secondary schools) for the schools in their areas. Our system will help parents make optimum decisions on choice of schools and the order in which they place those choices, so that their child is most likely to be offered a place in a school that suits them. Our system will: - Introduce itself – this system will prompt you with suggestions…

We are making a suite of data visualisation tools for use in profiling individual's and organisations attainment, progress and potential. One of the tools we have developed has been used to show learners progress through the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence framework (www.learnerjourneydatajam.com) and won 'Best Future Potential' Award. We want to make this fit for the purposes of the English assessment frameworks and add additional functionality. Combining our in-house data modelling…

Using open data on the post-16 performance of schools and colleges in different subjects, SkillsRoute allows parents and young people to identify providers in their area at which they are likely to achieve their goals by age 18, showing projected grades in their chosen subjects. In turn, SkillsRoute then shows the higher education options that will be available based on the grades they are projected to obtain. SkillsRoute: 1. Maps out schools, colleges and apprenticeship providers within a selected…

We're building an innovative open source platform that helps parents to research and compare schools via a single destination by integrating traditional metrics with qualitative information typically neglected by league tables. A standardised synopsis will be automatically compiled for each school, comprising basic details such as location and contact details, statistics regarding the school and its students, but also supplemental information that differentiates one institution from another…

Open Ofsted Data

A website and web API to make Ofsted data more open and available. Parents will be able to search for the best school for their children in their local area, teachers will be able to review the history of their schools Ofsted rating and developers will be able to connect their application to Ofsted data via an API. Ofsted data is published in formats very difficult to interact with and review. The power of structuring this data is empowering people to be able to find, compare and review the schools…

Our aim is to help reveal high educational performers irrespective of their social demographic. For example: - Average achievers in a high achieving school who, due to their individual circumstances, are doing particularly well despite adversity - High achievers in a moderately achieving school - Average/high achievers in a poorly achieving school In identifying pupils with the potential for high achievement, we aim to give educational providers the ability to support these pupils to maximise positive…

iKnow Education is ‘a one-stop-shop for all FAQs in education, catering for both children and parents’ designed to eliminate confusion and make information accessible to all kinds of people. By using the open data, we hope to centralise the most important information and develop a highly intuitive, easy-to-navigate app/website which: 1. relies on minimal effort/input from parents 2. answers parents’ questions and gives succinct, personalised information in return 3. highlights the next steps…

What is it? www.schoolperformancetables.com is the home of the National Single Indicator, which combines a number of standardised and well documented measures of school performance to provide a simple, straightforward benchmark of how well a school is doing. Based entirely on open data, the indicator is formed from an amalgam of the expected progress measures; the main threshold level; pupils’ average point score; and the value added measure. By changing the weight attributed to each of these…

Multi-Layer interactive presentation, drawing conclusions about school success factors, based on all schools data (schools in England, as published by the DoE), then using the conclusions to look at schools in a target area, giving the parents opportunity to make an informed choice. Publicly available data will be transformed into user-friendly and interactive interface that people without programming or analytic skills can use and understand. Currently, parents have very little information on how their children are doing in school and therefore be able to provide appropriate support for them. This project will produce a child assessment application that tells parents how their child is doing compared to children of a similar age. The software will ask children a series of questions based on their age and how they answer previous questions to provide an assessment of how the child is doing compared to their Age Related Expectations (ARE).…

Following feedback from Education open data challenge, I am currently changing the scope of this project. Using Ed-venture website/app, parents can easily screen for their preferred schools, evaluate how other parents perceive the school, and assess the likelihood of admission for their children based on where they live. At the same time, they would be able to network with 'great' teachers and hear about their best practices from other parents.

Illustreets (www.illustreets.co.uk) is a location research tool for England. It offers detailed information about any address, including average prices and rents, schools, public transport, census data, and crime rates. The application features an advanced school explorer. The users can simply click on the map, or type in a postcode, and get the nearest 5 to 15 schools which then can be filtered by Ofsted rating, gender, and phase of education. See the school explorer in action here: www.illustreets.co.uk/explore-england/london-sw12-8nx/schools/…

Our School Finder tool brings open data together from various sources, enabling parents and carers to make better choices. The Schools Finder takes a postcode and shows: - historic school cut off distances - general information about schools - links to Ofsted reports and supports parents to decide which preferences to make as part of the school admissions process. The schools admission process can be complex. There is a lot of information available to parents and carers, but not all of it is available…

Website to rate schools in an area to help parents who are moving to an area decide which school to send children to. Will involve peer reviews, performance metrics and any other metric we can source to accurately rate a school. We started using Open Data that has been released for free coving all sorts of information about schools performance and other data. We started at a hack the city event for open data on education and are continuing from there. There isn't a similar service in the UK…
